Dr. Dyan Haspel-Johnson on Hypnosis, Improving Quality of Sleep, Slowing Down Brain Waves, Altered States, and Much More (#140)

“Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.”

– Zen Proverb

Dr. Dyan Haspel is a highly accomplished and successful licensed psychologist, hypnotherapist, and trauma specialist. For over 25 years she has been creating self-hypnosis recordings for thousands of busy people to help them heal their bodies and minds so that they can sleep and reach their potential in their relationships, their work, and in their physical and mental health.

Before building her full private practice, she worked for 20 years in a holistic medical office using mind-body-spirit interventions. She also taught hypnosis for sleep, to treat pain, anxiety, depression, digestive and immune issues, and more, at UCLA, USC, and the Southern California Society for Clinical Hypnosis, where she served as President.

She lives from the principles of integrity, compassion, and empowerment. In order reach our highest levels of our potential personally and professionally, we need to rest. To help more people do that, she created Self-Hypnosis for Healing Corp. The key online product, the Deep & Easy Sleep Self-Hypnosis package provides people with 7 self-hypnosis audios, 2 how-to videos and a guidebook. It teaches people how to rely on natural skills (instead of pills!) to rest and resource themselves throughout the day, and to sleep at night.

The self-hypnosis strategies that she has designed differ from other apps or downloads because they have been built on understandings of physiology (brain waves, sleep architecture, the endocrine system, etc.) and the psyche (hypnotic language, autonomic processing, the unconscious, etc.).

Ariel Garten — Co-founder of Muse: The Brain Sensing Headband, Meditation Practice, Kill Your Inner Critic, and Much More (#136)

“It is okay to suck at meditation”

– Ariel Garten

Ariel Garten is a neuroscientist, innovator, and entrepreneur whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential. Garten is one of the Founders of InteraXon, the makers of Muse: the brain sensing headband. Muse is the award-winning wearable technology that assists and trains meditation and mindfulness.

Before founding InteraXon, Ariel was not only trained as a neuroscientist and psychotherapist, but also started her own international clothing line while she worked in labs researching Parkinson’s disease and hippocampal neurogenesis. Her creativity and entrepreneurial drive, combined with her fascination with the brain, lead her to bring together two like minded friends and together they founded InteraXon, a Silicon Valley backed startup that allowed people to control computers with their minds, the technology that sparked the creation of Muse.

The technology was the feature showcase at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, where they allowed over 7,000 people control the lights on the CN tower, Canadian parliament buildings, and Niagara Falls with their brains from across the country. Muse is now used and loved around the world, in 5 languages with over 5,000,000 sessions of meditation.  Ariel and her team have been featured in over 1000 media pieces, including CNN, Forbes, Fortune, WSJ, etc. and recipients of multiple innovation awards.

These days, Ariel can be found at home playing with her 2 year old or on stage across the world speaking about happiness, meditation, understanding mental health, empowering women in business, or telling her own innovation story, consistently giving her audiences the tools they need to help them become their best selves.

Dr. Susan LaCombe — Coping with Trauma, Emotionally Available Therapist, Somatic Models, Connection of Trauma with Nervous System, and Much More (#135)

People are not lazy,  a good chunk of it is that people are tired depleted on the inside

– Susan Lacombe

Dr. Susan Lacombe is a closet-rebel psychologist working through her fears, trying to make an imprint on the world for something she believes is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.  She was once very troubled—her trauma history had caught up to her early two clinical depressions before age 30.  She turned to therapy for an answer. Turned out to be the wrong solution—well for about 14 times Until . . . . . . around her 4th decade on this planet she found the right kind of therapy . . . or was it the right type of therapist? Tricky question.

The type of therapy her therapist used was a whole paradigm shift away from the others. It was a trauma-based somatic model. It not only made sense of her life, it suddenly became clear that the mental health field was approaching anxiety and depression with outdated methods. After a thousand clinical hours as a psychotherapist/psychologist and responding to hundreds of questions from people in therapy and seeing needless suffering, she wonders if we’re going about it all wrong.

She believes that if we harness our energies to helping the unborn and later infant child, we’ll have far less issues with emotional dysregulation and with that, far lower rates of mental illness, anxiety, depression and related issues of abandonment, transference, authority issues and the like. She asks if we did that, could we change the trajectory of our trauma pattern as nations.
